Finding Wellness that Works for You

Back in 2016, I was unwell and diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder. I was on two types of medication and also had NHS talking therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

As well as seeing my Doctor and having conventional treatment, I did a lot of other things to help my condition and to try and feel better.

I tried different types of exercise as I knew movement could help mental wellbeing by releasing mood boosting chemicals such as endorphins. I did Couch to 5K, concluding by running 5K and raising money for Breast Cancer, tried Boot Camp outdoor classes and Zumba. None of these really stuck other than Yoga, as that for me felt like coming home. Through Yoga I was able to build a better relationship with my body, then my mind and then my soul.

It doesn’t matter that I didn't continue the other forms of exercise up until the present moment, what matters is that I bothered to try them and have a curiosity about them. I still enjoyed them and I was being proactive in my wellbeing, not expecting medication alone to fix my life.

Sometimes we just have to try things out.

As well as exercise I did lots of other things to help lift my spirits. I did a six week Spiritual Development Course where I was introduced to Crystals and Oracle cards and I began to work with Rose Quartz. This is a beautiful crystal if you need to cultivate self love and forgiveness. I had reflexology which helped me feel calmer and the therapeutic touch helped me feel more into my body rather than being locked into my mind.

I also did a Tarot Workshop and learned how you can read the cards yourself as well as visiting a Tarot reader.

I could write and write about all the different things I tried, but they are all part of my journey.

Some things I have discarded and others have stuck. The methods that helped me the most I have gone on and trained in, my hope is that I will be able to help others with these modalities in the way they have helped me. I cannot be an expert in everything -I stick to what I know and what I feel I can do best.

There will be something out there for you to help you feel better regardless of your situation.

For example if you love running, but have temporarily or permanently lost the use of your legs, maybe meditation or breathwork may help you as an alternative.

Take a piece of paper, write down all the things that help you feel better, then write down things you would like to try and come up with a plan.

Then, make a start. Book that treatment, or start that walk or read the book.

Take action. Give it a go.

If you are trying something out, whatever it is, even if it doesn’t work in the way you may hope it does, take your experience from it as valuable information for your health journey.

Wishing you a week full of happiness and  wellness, share with me below what helps you feel good.
