asking yourself what you really want
There are many different symbols of success in the modern world including a high numbered income, owning property, visiting destinations, having a certain gadget or acheiing a qualification.
Have you ever thought what do I really want?
It can be very easy from mass media such as television or social media to think you want what is popular and seen as goals. You may not aspire to that.
Most humans want the basics such as shelter, food and drink and adequate suitable clothing.
Other than that there is a huge range of possibilities. Family connection might be your most important value or persuing a career. It could be a craft, more time to enjoy music, acting, lifting a certain weight or running a marathon.
Sometimes we are so busy surviving we dont have time to think about following dreams. Depending on our background we may even feel guilty for having any privilages when for some life is so challenging. It can feel selfish and indulgent.
We only get one life and as long as it is appropriate, there is nothing wrong with wanting something different to someone else. I often ask myself: “What would the version of me 5 years from now want for me?” and I try and live by that.
Sometimes we may have periods of our lives where there is nothing we particularly want and that’s fine too. There are times for planning, times for action, times for release and times for pausing.
What we want changes too. Something can happen, and what we wanted a few weeks ago is now longer suitable and we have to adapt and change course. What is important is to spend time with yourself without being on autopilot. Giving yourself time to just have time to think and connect with your emotions. Asking yourself, do I genuinly want this or do I just think I do?
Some people may find it helpful to journal this or just light a candle and sit quietly and ask yourself the question “What do I want?” and see if you have any insights. Then ask yourself “Why?” and that often gives you the clue to where the desire comes from- a financial need, a personal goal or to feel accepted.
This just gives us some time to check what we want before we persue it to make sure it is truly authentic to us.
I hope you have the confidence and clarity to find what makes you happy and you are able to make it happen
