How Salt lamps may help you feel calm
Two years ago my partner purchased my first Himalayan Salt lamp on behalf of my children as a gift, as I had been talking about how much I liked them. I just found looking at them helped me feel happier and soothed. I am naturally quite an anxious person so I am very attracted to things that make me feel uplifted in any way.
I love the beautiful orangey glow and I realise the colour reminds me of a sunset which I find calming as it's almost like the sun is saying to me, "I'm going to bed, you can rest now too”.
The most beautiful sunset I have ever seen was on the beach in Goa, India where the horizon was just the most beautiful golden colour and it was absolutely mesmerizing.
Many people today are over-stimulated because they either have a neurological condition such as autism or ADHD, or simply because they are just doing too much.
The subtle glow of a salt lamp is ideal as it’s not harsh or overpowering, it's a gentle light and a good alternative to traditional harsh artificial lighting.
This makes these lamps a great addition to treatment rooms to help clients relax or in communal spaces where a lamp can be added in a corner where an overhead light could be turned off.
Salt lamps can also be helpful with sleep issues. If we are exposed to too much light in the evening, it can suppress the hormone melatonin which helps us feel ready to sleep. Putting a Salt lamp on and turning other lights off can help us send the message to our brains that we are ready to switch off for the day and begin to let the nervous system settle into rest and digit mode. Our heart rates and brain activity can slow down.
Menopausal women especially can have issues with sleep and light waking. Rather than put a bright light on to go to the bathroom or change sheets from hot sweats, a salt lamp can give off enough light so you can get out of bed safely without waking you up so much you feel you can’t go back to sleep.
Just like ourselves, no two Himalayan salt lamps are the same as they are handcrafted from natural crystal salt and they are all different shapes, sizes, weights and shades. The lamps remind us beauty is found in our individuality, we all have our unique talents, ideas and experiences and that is our greatest strength.
Small lamps retail at around £15-£25 so they are affordable and make a beautiful gift for a loved one or a request for yourself.
I love mine and find it very helpful. I enjoy putting it on in the evening as the beginning of my ritual- more about that next week.
Let me know if you have a salt lamp and what you think, I’d love to know. Send me a DM on Instagram or a message on the contact form on the website.
Wishing you restful evenings,
Claire
