How indian head massage can support perimenopause.

I’m looking forward to adding Indian Head massage to my holistic therapies once completing my training this September.

Indian head massage is part of the Ayurvedic healing system and has been practiced in India for centuries. Often babies and children have head massages and they learn to massage their parents and grandparents. Traditionally oils can be used such as sesame, almond and herbal oils, but it can also be done without.

There are many different techniques, but the method I am currently learning focuses on upper back, shoulders, neck scalp and face. Like Reflexology, there is no need to undress but easier to wear a short sleeve or vest top for easy access to shoulders and upper back. It is traditionally performed seated, but can also be done reclined.

Indian head massage is a good complementary therapy for perimenopause as it can be used to help relieve tension ij the head and shoulders that can lead to migraines. Migraines can worsen or begin to occur in perimenopause due to the lowering of oestrogen. These can be debilitating for women leading them unable to drive or work temporarily.

The deep relaxation people can feel afterwards can lead to a deeper longer sleep which is extremely helpful for women who are waking up in the night due to hormone changes, anxiety and night sweats.

The massage itself is great for boosting blood flow and improving circulation. This can help support lymphatic drainage and allieviate the sluggishness associated with brain fog, which is a common complaint in perimenopause.

Some of the techniques are rhythmic, and very soothing for the mind. This relaxation can lower the production of the stress hormone cortisol, and the feeling of touch promote oxytocin, a mood improving hormone. Touch can also help us anchor into the present moment. Anxiety is sometimes reported in this period of life and lead people to worry about the future. Returning to the here and now can be very comforting.

I personally have always receiving this treatment and find it extremely calming. It can be experienced on its own or combined with Reflexology for a top to toe experience. It will be available to book from the beginning of October, details will be added to the website.

Wishing you a relaxing week, Claire
