Reflexology to support menopause
Fortunately over the last two decades especially, much more research has been done how to support women better with menopause. It is a process approximately half the population will experience.
Workplaces have more policies in place to support staff, and conventional medicine such as Hormone Replacement Therapy is much wider available in different versions and strength to be adapted to an individuals personal needs.
HRT may be unsuitable for some women to take or they may not wish to and they look to complementary therapies to support them during this time. Reflexology can be beneficial for helping manage menopause symptoms as it can be used with HRT and without.
Reflexology involves applying targeted pressure to specific points on the feet, hands ears or face to help promote relaxation and healing. It helps shift the body into the parasymphathetic state of rest and digest so the heart rate slows, blood pressure lowers and deeper breathing can occur.
Reflexologists can tailor a session to work specific reflexes to support certain issues someone may be experiencing.
If sleep is an issue, the pineal gland reflex can be worked in a session. The pineal gland controls the sleep/ wake cycle by releasing melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel sleepy. The solar plexus area is often also used to help release tension and induce relaxation. Many clients say after a session they fall asleep quicker and stay asleep for longer.
Night sweats are a very common menopause symptom. Around 75% of women will experience these due to declining oestrogen. a 20216 study showed women who had reflexology twice a week for six weeks had fewer night sweats. (Source-menopausecare.co.uk).
Many women experience different pains in menopause such as neck aches, headaches, migraines, back pain and joint pain. Endorphins released in reflexology are the bodies’ natural painkillers which can help relieve discomfort.
Reflexology will not stop the symptoms of menopause but can be used as part of a lifestyle to manage them. Remember to always consult your GP if you have any concerns for your health. Just by taking time out for self care to reduce fatigue can be very beneficial for your health.
